Score:  72% Bicycle Friendly

Position running for: City Council District 10

Question 1: "You're driving along and you encounter a person on a bicycle taking up the entire lane. What is your reaction?

A, That's illegal and they should be riding on the sidewalk.

B, Intimidate them so they will learn their place on the roadway.

C, It's okay to hit them with your car, and it's their fault for being in the way.

D, None of the above.

Reason for answer: D.  While the cyclist ought to ride along the curb if slower than the speed limit, it is never appropriate for a driver to hit a cyclist or intimidate the cyclist off the road. Doing so would make for a more dangerous situation for all involved. Bike laws are designed to avoid disrupting the flow of traffic but work to protect the cyclist as well.

Question 2: Running for Council: Will you as a Council Member focus on putting down a Protected Bicycle Lane on the busiest corridor in your district? And what is the busiest corridor in your district?
Yes
Comments:  I believe cyclists should be as protected as possible and that the best way to do that is to establish a dedicated bike lane to catch as many commuters as possible. There is safety in numbers for cyclists and creating bike lanes on major arteries in District 10 makes it likely to get accomplished. Doing so will also ease the battle-of-the-lanes between cars and cyclists. I would advocate for a small cyclist commission or bike survey to better understand where the most important adjustments need to be made on the roads. I am not personally a cyclist and do not see many on my commute, but I know there are many. We need to let them inform the council as to what would make sense so as to make the most positive impact, not waste money, and incur needless traffic disruptions in areas commuters do not even want to use. As the traffic continues to grow, more folks may be interested in sustainable commute options.

Question 3:  "How should the Linear Creekways be funded, and on which improvement to the Linear Creekway do you want the funds to be spent?"
Answer: Having spoken with some of the neighbors in the Briarwick and Judson neighborhoods, I would advocate to advance the project in development to connect a new trail from Friesenhahn Park to the Salado Creek Greenway in District 10. We can be creative about using future bond funds, private funds, and city funds to complete this. It is good for the environment and allows people to get active and enjoy the outdoor space San Antonio has to offer.

Question 4:  "Do you support increased funds to expand and maintain VIA bus services and routes?"
Yes and No
Reason for answer:  The voters of District 10 and San Antonio as a whole voted in support of the VIA proposition in November of 2020. I look forward to working with VIA and my District 10 neighbors to see VIA become more accessible - especially for our elderly and disabled residents. As someone who used VIA for almost a year with my family when we did not have transportation at home, I always support VIA services and encourage people to use it as a way to help curb growing traffic concerns across San Antonio.

Question 5:  "Should funding for more bicycle lanes and pedestrian safety education be included in the city's annual transportation budget?"
Yes
Reason for Answer:  I do support more funding for protected bicycle lanes. I agree more riders, pedestrians, and drivers should be further educated around state and local bike laws that keep everyone safe. As councilman, I would also prioritize community input in our funding process so individual projects like these can be funded quicker and based on representation. I'm interested in hearing what improvements cyclists would like to see regarding pedestrian safety education.
