Score: 38% Bicycle Friendly
Position running for: Mayor
Question 1: "You're driving along and you encounter a person on a bicycle taking up the entire lane. What is your reaction?
A, That's illegal and they should be riding on the sidewalk.
B, Intimidate them so they will learn their place on the roadway.
C, It's okay to hit them with your car, and it's their fault for being in the way.
D, None of the above.
Reason for answer: The right to the roadway is equal for
bicyclists. I would yield the right of way, be protective of my
surroundings and recognize the need for safety for both the cyclist and
myself.
Question
2: Running for Mayor: Will you as Mayor focus on putting a Protected Bicycle Lane on the busiest corridors in San Antonio, and what do you consider to be the most important corridor in the city?
Yes
Comments: There are equally busy corridors across San Antonio and this
becomes a major issue due to budgeting shortfalls and priorities. Bike
lanes are a public safety priority. I would start with the most
trafficked lanes and look to protect other lanes that lead into our
linear creekway system to help bicyclists access our trail system more
safely. My family and I ride the trails frequently and we recognize the
need for protected access immediately.
Question
3: How should the Linear Creekways be funded, and on which
improvement to the Linear Creekway do you want the funds to be spent?
Answer: The current Mayor removed funding for the linear creekway system to pay
for items he considered another priority. I would have never removed
funding. I will reinstate full funding as Mayor and not push it off to
the county to fund. Having ridden every trail, I would like to see an
expansion and upgrade to continue to the south (Salado) and inclusion to
the east sides of San Antonio. I would also include expansion up
through District 6 to connect along Leon Creek to Westside.
Question 4: "Do you support increased funds to expand and maintain VIA bus services and routes?"
Yes
Reason for answer: As a councilmember I supported increased funding for VIA to the
total of $10 million per year. I did, however, feel that funding VIA 5
years into the future, with the previous November election, was not a
wise choice of future taxation. I would continue to support increased
funding, but frankly, VIA needs to get a better focus and work towards a
more transparent process to allocate funds. For instance, our bus
stops are in dire straits and areas of San Antonio where public
transportation is needed, are drastically underfunded. I am a supporter
of VIA, but plan to hold them accountable to their increased funding.
Question
5: "Should funding for more bicycle lanes and pedestrian safety
education be included in the city's annual transportation budget?"
Yes
Reason for Answer: I believe we need a greater focus to fund education and especially
signage. We must be very clear about the rules of the road for all
transportation options, but for bicyclists it is especially important. I
do believe a lack of knowledge and signage is a major safety issue.
Why 10 points where deducted from score.
What you see here is Greg Brockhouse complaining about Ana Sandoval (D7) and Ron Nirenberg (Mayor) about the two supporting bike lanes and getting people out of their car through ConnectSA.
