Position running for: City Council District 7

Score:  91.2% Bicycle Friendly

Question 1: "You're driving along and you encounter a person on a bicycle taking up the entire lane. What is your reaction?

A, That's illegal and they should be riding on the sidewalk.

B, Intimidate them so they will learn their place on the roadway.

C, It's okay to hit them with your car, and it's their fault for being in the way.

D, None of the above.

Reason for answer:   It is within the full right for a cyclist to take up an entire traffic lane and often a safety method employed by cyclists to prevent being passed too closely by vehicles not adhering to or unaware of the city’s safe passing ordinance.

Question 2: Running for Council: Will you as a Council Member focus on putting down a Protected Bicycle Lane on the busiest corridor in your district? And what is the busiest corridor in your district?
Yes
Comments:  Bandera Road is the busiest corridor in District 7. I have brought together the City, Leon Valley, TxDOT, and State Elected Officials to develop a plan to solve traffic congestion and ensure economic prosperity along Bandera Rd. This plan will also look at how we ensure the roadway can serve all users, including cyclists through a protected bicycle lane(s).

Question 3:  How should the Linear Creekways be funded, and on which improvement to the Linear Creekway do you want the funds to be spent?
Answer:   Improvements for the Linear Creekways can be funded through several sources, including the upcoming 2022 Bond Program. I would want creekway funding to be directed towards extending the creekway trail system into underinvested parts of our community like the inner westside. We must also prioritize the expansion of our trail system in areas of our community where we see our highest numbers of pedestrians and cycling injuries and fatalities due to collisions with motor vehicles.

Question 4:  "Do you support increased funds to expand and maintain VIA bus services and routes?"
Yes
Reason for answer:  I have supported increased funds to expand and maintain VIA bus services and routes including supporting the Advanced Transportation District ballot proposition in 2020. I have also recently advocated to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for more funding for public transit. I will continue to support funding VIA service improvements.

Question 5:  "Should funding for more bicycle lanes and pedestrian safety education be included in the city's annual transportation budget?"
Yes
Reason for Answer:  Yes. The City has created a new Transportation Department that oversees the implementation of our SA Tomorrow Multimodal Transportation Plan, including leading the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities by prioritizing safety for people driving, walking, biking, and riding transit. We must continue to invest in infrastructure and programming that will save lives on the roadway.
