Position running for: City Council District 8

Score:  70.08% Bicycle Friendly

Question 1: "You're driving along and you encounter a person on a bicycle taking up the entire lane. What is your reaction?

A, That's illegal and they should be riding on the sidewalk.

B, Intimidate them so they will learn their place on the roadway.

C, It's okay to hit them with your car, and it's their fault for being in the way.

D, None of the above.

Reason for answer:  I’m a cyclist. Riding bikes is as much my right as walking or driving. Cars do not have more of a claim to the road that I do when I’m on my bike.

Question 2: Running for Council: Will you as a Council Member focus on putting down a Protected Bicycle Lane on the busiest corridor in your district? And what is the busiest corridor in your district?
Yes
Comments:  Wurzbach through the Medical Center and all of Floyd Curl are my current priorities for cycling accessibility. With your help, we’ve been able to add bike lanes to Floyd Curl but we must complete it with the next budget cycle and that next bond packages.

Question 3:  How should the Linear Creekways be funded, and on which improvement to the Linear Creekway do you want the funds to be spent?
Answer:  We can EASILY complete the linear creekways with 4 funding sources. 1. Annual budget dollars; 2. 2022 bond dollars; 3. County budget dollars; and 4. SAWS funds. The funds MUST be spent on connecting ALL trails so that San Antonios everywhere can access them - - and so that cyclists can do a full loop around the city. Also, dollars MUST be spent on adding capacity to mountain bike, BMX, and gravel bike amenities.

Question 4:  "Do you support increased funds to expand and maintain VIA bus services and routes?"
Yes
Reason for answer:  Great cities offer multiple modes of transportation for all residents. VIA is an essential component of of our future growth and traffic management. However, I believe that VIA has a branding and a trust problem. Too many San Antonians believe that VIA is an option for “those people” (ie. poor people, people from the other side of town, people who need to get out of my way during my commute to work). VIA needs to invest in changing this mindset - - otherwise, not amount of investment in new buses and new routes will matter.

Question 5:  "Should funding for more bicycle lanes and pedestrian safety education be included in the city's annual transportation budget?"
Yes
Reason for Answer:  Bicycle fatalities are foreseeable and preventable. Education is the key to preventing more unnecessary deaths. Bike safety and pedestrian safety education works and our Vision Zero initiative must continue to guide our efforts. More bike lanes is not enough. We MUST match our bike lane investment to our education investment to truly make a difference.
